Acer Bloodgood:

Tyler Kirkham 2006 Sketchbook + Civil War: Young Avengers & Runaways

Tyler Kirkham 2006 Sketchbook

Tyler Kirkham narrates his sketchbook with the story of how he got his professional career started—networking and persistence played key roles. The black and white art emphasizes pin-up work over continuity pages and the subject matter is the usual mix of muscly he-men, buxom females and threatening beasts, including Kirkham’s cover for The Darkness/Wolverine crossover event.

Civil War: Young Avengers & Runaways

This four-issue mini-series written by Zeb Wells and illustrated by Stafano Caselli represents the presence of the Young Avengers and the Runaways in Marvel’s 2006 Civil War cross-over event. Generally oblivious to life outside Southern California, the Runaways maintain a position of “studied indifference” to the Superhuman Registration Act until S.H.I.E.L.D. enforcers take down Victor Mancha after an unrelated encounter with Flag Smasher at the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market.

The Young Avengers arrive to enlist the Runaways in the resistance and the two teams are quickly drawn into a battle with the renegade Kree Noh-Varr who turns out to be under the mental control of a S.H.I.E.L.D. team from an alternate dimension. These events take place after the events of Young Avengers #12 and Runaways #12 (2nd Series) and before Civil War #3.

Acer Bloodgood is the pen name of a longtime ComicBase writer acquired from a family of maple trees. There is some worry that this sobriquet is “too goth-weenie.” For the record, Acer grew up in California’s suburban sprawl and now lives in San Francisco where he whiles the nights away in dingy dive bars. He drinks whisky with seltzer and lemon.
