Acer Bloodgood:

Untold Tales of the New Universe: Justice + Rokkin

Untold Tales of the New Universe: Justice

Part of the build-up to Warren Ellis’ 2006 re-launch of Marvel’s newuniversal continuity line, this Justice one-shot introduces modern readers to the longest running franchise of the original New Universe imprint from the late 1980s.

Situated early in the title character’s development, this story emphasizes the rage and ferocity Justice learned to temper in order to execute his self-ordained mission. Even though Justice can see into a person’s heart (he reads auras), he still has blind spots that force him to look deeper into his own heart.

This six-issue limited series from Wildstorm by Andy Hartnell and Nick Bradshaw describes the events befalling a young man named Arness who finds himself thrust into a warrior’s role when he only wanted to marry his true love and raise a family. Enchanted by a magical stone, Arness becomes the deadly barbarian Rokkin, who journeys to Demortia to fight the evil Lord Vulmax. Along the way, Rokkin falls in with a mysterious Valkyrie, fights Medusa, and overcomes a band of assassins. Jim Charalampidis’ vibrant and dynamic digital color palette does not stint on the blood and gore.

Acer Bloodgood is the pen name of a longtime ComicBase writer acquired from a family of maple trees. There is some worry that this sobriquet is “too goth-weenie.” For the record, Acer grew up in California’s suburban sprawl and now lives in San Francisco where he whiles the nights away in dingy dive bars. He drinks whisky with seltzer and lemon.
