Needless to say, ComicBase has surpassed all our expectations in the nearly 17 years since we launched ComicBase 1.0 on six floppy disks back in 1993. Back then, ComicBase shipped with information on 20,000 issues from some 297 titles. It’s been a long, crazy trip to get to the 32,200 titles/442,000 issues we now ship with today!
As we prepare to round the corner on 2010, it turns out that there were two limitations in the program which were unthinkable that we’d ever hit when the program was first designed...but that we’re about to run smack into.
The most pressing is a design issue which had the effect of limiting the database to 32,767 titles--a number which was ridiculously large back in 1992, but which we’re actually starting to approach. Some users who have added a great many of their own or custom titles are already starting to bump into this limitation in the form of an “overflow” error when they attempt to use ComicBase Statistics or a few other functions in the program.
A secondary design limit caused problems when adding comic titles whose Years Published extend to 2010 and beyond--another once-unthinkable limit which we’re just starting to reach now.
ComicBase 14.1-- free for all users with a current update subscription--handles both issues. For obvious reasons, this one’s a required update for all users who are updating their database via the weekly download, and you’ll be prompted to upgrade to it before updating your comics this week.
If you’re already running ComicBase 14, it’s available as a 6 MB updater under the Support section of the ComicBase.com web site. Users of ComicBase Atlas and earlier editions should download the full version of ComicBase 14 from the link under your Registrations page. If you have any questions or need assistance with the update, please contact our support staff at support@comicbase.com, or by phone at 408/266-6883
If your update subscription has lapsed, or you’re using an older version of ComicBase, we’d strongly encourage you to update to ComicBase 14.1, and we’re extending our upgrade specials until December 1st so you can save money in the bargain. In addition to future-proofing your investment in ComicBase, it also includes some very cool new features, as well as Windows 7 compatibility and a year of program and issue updates as part of the upgrade. Just click the Renew (or Upgrade) button on your Registrations page for special upgrade pricing, or call our sales and support line at 408/266-6883 if we can assist you in any way.
All the best,
