Last Sane Cowboy and Other Stories + Dome
Genre: Western, Drama
A man who bleeds scorpions – literally. A woman looking for her brother, whose path is barred by talking horses, threatening skulls, and a scorpion in a cowboy hat. A girl who can smell the future. These and other offbeat, low-key tales mix humor and drama in a clever, unique collection of stories that feels like something out of a barely remembered dream or nightmare. One minute you’ll be alarmed, then realize it’s okay to just laugh at the insanity of it all.
Writer-artist Daniel Merlin Goodbrey comes up with something in his inky drawings and minimal text that manages to be both familiar and different. It’s not as hard to do as it is do well, and he achieves it.
Genre: Pin-Ups/Art Books
Spanish artist Luis Royo is probably best known (or recognized) for his painted art of beautiful women that often graces the cover of Heavy Metal. Perhaps that was what the owner of a castle in Moscow was thinking of when he commissioned Royo to paint 45 life-sized women on the interior of a domed ceiling. This book presents the gorgeous, erotic images that resulted, of mostly nude women frolicking, bathing, and embracing each other.
This hardbound edition is accompanied by text detailing the massive project, which Royo and his son, Romulo, completed. Photos showing the finished dome and the work as it moved forward through each stage give a remarkable sense of the skill involved in the project.
