Joseph Self makes a departure from comics to tackle another subject close to fandom’s heart: Star Trek, or more specifically, The Star Trek Experience™ at the Las Vegas Hilton
Whether you’re a diehard Star Trek fan, or just need a break from Vegas’s lights, noise, and cigarette smoke, The Star Trek Experience™ is a fun few hours! Set inside the Las Vegas Hilton, the attraction incorporates a restaurant modeled after TV’s Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, a museum of costumes, props, and other memorabilia, a self-guided historical timeline featuring hundreds of photo images, and a variety of retail shops selling everything from the usual souvenirs to high-end collector’s items—for instance, LeVar Burton’s visor can be yours for a mere $7000!
The attraction also features two live-action “rides” based on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager, utilizing pre-recorded segments starring actors from those series. The Klingon Experience™ simulates an exciting shuttle ride that goes from deep space to Vegas’ neon-lit skyline. Annoyingly, this show repeatedly suggests that the guests have actually been transported through time. The “4-D” Borg Invasion™ has unwary crewmen snatched away at every opportunity, much like a haunted house. The 3D graphics are good, but the guests themselves are never physically approached by the Borg - safer, but less than expected from the promos.
